Obit of the Day: Founder of the Tulsa Ballet
If we are honest about our stereotypes, Tulsa, Oklahoma is not a city that would seem ballet-friendly. But Moscelyne Larkin, and her husband Roman Jasinski, a Polish émigré, started a student dance troupe in 1946 that would grow into the Tulsa Ballet.
Ms. Larkin grew up in Oklahoma, where her mother, a Russian ballet artist owned a dance studio. Her father was part-Welsh and part-Native American (Shawnee and Peoria).
Note: Ms. Larkin’s Native American heritage made her a member of the so-called “American Indian Ballerinas of Oklahoma.” The group also included Yvonne Chouteau, Rosella Hightower, and Maria and Marjorie Tallchief. The women were all of Native American heritage and toured internationally with various ballet troupes in the 1940s. Ms. Larkin first brought the five women together with the Oklahoma Indian Ballerina Festival in 1956. A statue was unveiled in their honor in Tulsa in 1982.
After attending school in New York City, Ms. Larkin auditioned for the “Original Ballet Russe” at the age of 15. She was hired immediately and began touring Europe. Because the group was Russian they changed Ms. Larkin’s name to the more authentic-sounding, “Moussia Larkina.” It was while with Ballet Russe that she met her husband.
Ms. Larkin died in Tulsa at the age of 87

Dear Michael,
When the time comes to chase your dreams, and it will, they may seem elusive; but know you won’t catch them all at once. Just one challenge at a time.
When success comes, and it will, don’t gobble it up—savor and share it, and it will last.
When love comes, and it will, don’t bury it in expectation and projection—be prepared to fall in love all over again every day.
When the unexpected and inconceivable intrudes on life, and it will, deal with life’s actual events—don’t obsess about perceived eventualities.
Relax—enjoy the ride.

If whatever you’re doing doesn’t make you happy or at least provide you the money to go to a therapist or a liquor store to take care of that unhappiness, then it’s time to blow that taco stand. Life is too short for anything else.

Closing your eyes isn’t going to change anything. Nothing’s going to disappear just because you can’t see what’s going on. In fact, things will even be worse the next time you open your eyes. That’s the kind of world we live in. Keep your eyes wide open. Only a coward closes his eyes. Closing your eyes and plugging up your ears won’t make time stand still.

Life’s A Happy Song

posted 2 months ago

Seriously, I cannot get The Muppets’ song out of my head. My internal playlist is bouncing between Muppets, Young the Giant’s Ignition cover, some Ray Wylie Hubbard, and a small smattering of other songs that don’t seem to fit together unless you know me (then it makes perfect sense).

I feel like every other week or so I just gush about how great my life is, but really it is. My life is by no means perfect, but damn if my life isn’t pretty amazing. I live in an amazing city, have fantastic friends, and spend a lot of time doing things I love.

Don’t get me wrong, I have my bad moments. I get anxious, angry, sad, but I rarely stay that way very long. Something good always happens to wipe it away.

Right now I’ll just enjoy my coffee, the sunshine, and the random music coming out of my Spotify.

Just a Thought

“I disregard the proportions, the measures, the tempo of the ordinary world. I refuse to live in the ordinary world as ordinary women. To enter ordinary relationships. I want ecstasy. I am a neurotic — in the sense that I live in my world. I will not adjust myself to the world. I am adjusted to myself.”
 Anais Nin

I think I need to work on this more. I am somewhere inbetween. I know what I want but am not secure enough to let everything go and go after it.

I Am Ridiculously Lucky

posted 2 months ago

I am sitting in my apartment watching the Foo Fighters’ documentary and cannot help but thinking about a day just over a year ago. I had filed for divorce. I was searching for so many things. I had lost a part of my identity in a number of ways. My marriage had separate me from a huge part of my life that I LOVED and had defined me in so many ways. I had neglected my friends and isolated myself socially.

It was a Tuesday. It was SxSW. I was in a bar. I met a man who my friends would later identify as my Anti-husband. He changed my perspective on everything. Brilliant, handsome, unafraid of seemingly inappropriate conversation. Shortly, a new friend would join. We met a random couple of other people and ended up with passes for the Foo Fighters performance than ended interactive. Two new relationships solidified in the next few days. That is enough for any girl, but that week I would also grow closer so a semi-professional acquaintance.

The week of SxSW last year altered my existence in crazy, wonderful ways. I regained confidence. I reconnected with a passion in my life. I created relationships that will always be a part of me. I am ridiculously lucky. My life seems to just put me in the right places at the right times. I have no idea how it happens. I am infinitely grateful that it does.

» Florilegia: Birth Control 101 For Idiots

bemusedlybespectacled:

This is hormonal birth control.

As you can see on the box, you take exactly one pill per day. To make sure it works, you need to take one pill every day at the same time, or it stops working. You take only one pill, and you keep taking them regardless of what you…
